The Aurea, the latest lava-lamp-cum-telly from Philips, is the best TV yet from their Ambilight range. Instead of a black panel with bulbs on the outside, the entire frame is now studded with no fewer than 126 LEDs. As a result, the Aurea creates a more immersive, room-filling light experience. When Tom Cruise takes to the skies in HD Top Gun, the frame radiates blue. When there’s a close-up of strawberry blond footballer Paul Scholes on Match of the Day, the whole thing glows orange. Chuck in a screen that can show four trillion colors, and you’ve got a set that gives the Bravia some serious competition. A 42-inch one is out now, expect humungo sizes to follow imminently.
