WHAT'S THE CONCEPT ?
Deep in Antarctica Norma Jean (Nicole Kidman) and her hubby Memphis (Hugh Jackman) are shamed to find their son Mumbles (Elijah Wood) is a horrible singer with absolutely zero talent. The sad truth is that in the Penguin Empire, singing is everything, and the most important trait that you’re judged by because only your singing can win you love. Ironically enough, Mumbles’ only friend Gloria (Britanny Murphy) with whom he shares a very strong connection from the minute he’s hatched, turns out to be the best singer to have ever graced the Empire.
WHAT'S LIKE ?
It’s a commentary on how to reject the false criticisms of cruddy society when you’re judged for being different, and the power of believing in yourself and how far it can get you. While to his mother his waning singing abilities come off as cute, he’s been marked off by the rest of the Penguin community as unacceptable, especially their stern leader Noah the Elder of Emperor Land who eventually outcasts little Mumbles from the community for being too different. Left out in the cold for the first time to fend for himself, Mumbles soon finds his own niche, a posse of penguins that are lacking in their Emperor-like ways as well, known as the Adelie-Amigos.
WORTH WATCHING ?
Animal lovers will take a fancying to this one. When the Adelie-Amigos mascot Ramon is impressed by Mumbles’ cool dance moves, he almost instantly brings him into the fold and they party together. The snowball keeps rolling especially after Mumbles seeks the counsel of a certain feathered Rockhopping penguin called Lovelace the Guru who’s off his rocker, but happy to answer life’s mysteries for nothing more than a pebble, and together with the crew they embark on journeys across the vast landscapes for more epic encounters. |
