WHAT’S THE CONCEPT? When Tom Baker (Martin) and his wife (Hunt) move to the big city after Tom gets his dream job to coach his alma mater’s team, him and his family of 12 herd their way over. But when, with the same stroke of good fortune, his wife gets a book deal to publish her chronicle of their family life, she gets drawn into a book tour, leaving her husband to his own devices to deal with his newfound, high-pressure career, while trying to keep the family and the house in order.
WHAT’S IT LIKE?
While this isn’t the kind of movie that’ll make film history, it’s something to pass an evening with. An enjoyable family flick, it’s a heart-warmer that is to be taken lightly. Get caught in the thick of a big family’s squabbles, in between laughs to yourself, as they try to endure the big transition that they find themselves in. Will it bring them to a higher place? Or will it paralyze their growth as a family?
WORTH WATCHING? While two rights shouldn’t make a wrong, this movie shows that sometimes what seems like a stroke of good fortune turns into a shock of bad faith, when the family begins to fall apart in the face of all the action. While Steve Martin has had better performances in the past, you won’t regret seeing him in this one. He still exhibits that nostalgic Hollywood, Father of the Bride charm that made a name for him, with family unity as the central theme. |
