What’s the concept?
Terrence Malick’s take on the famous story of Captain John Smith (Farrell) and Pocahontas (Q’Orianka Kilcher). It’s 1607 and three ships that have set sail from England finally land on the shores of Virginia, in the New World, or America as we know it today. As they establish the settlement of Jamestown, they find themselves faced with a struggle to survive, which includes fighting off the indigenous tribal neighbors.
What’s it like?
Malick is a director that injects plenty of style into his select handful of movies. In The New World he creates a poetic vision that leaves you feeling as if you are wandering through a beautiful visual landscape. Not much may happen but it certainly looks stunning, nonetheless.
Worth watching?
When Terrence Malick makes a movie, it’s an event so rare and so exciting that actors jump at the chance to work with him. Like his previous movies, The New World will win you over with its distinctly uncommercial vibe and its richly textured style. Lush music contributes to the exotic sensory experience that only Malick can conjure. |
